LET US LIGHT CANDLES - ADVENT / CHRISTMAS 2020

let us light candles

Matthew 25 and the Work of Advent

Presbyterians Today Advent and Christmas Devotional 2020

My Advent devotions for the eventful year 2020 are based on Howard Thurman's Poem, "I Will Light Candles This Christmas".  The devotional is published by the Presbyterian Church and includes the current thrust to put Jesus' mandates in Matthew 25 into real, life-changing practice.

WEEK ONE: "Candles of JOY despite all the sadness..."

WEEK TWO:  "Candles of HOPE where despair keeps watch..."

WEEK THREE:  "Candles of COURAGE for fears ever present..."

WEEK FOUR:  "Candles of PEACE for tempest-tossed days..."

CHRISTMAS EVE:  "Candles of GRACE to ease heavy burdens..."

TWELVE DAYS OF CHRISTMAS:  "Candles of LOVE to inspire all my living..."

EPIPHANY:  "Candles that will burn all year long."

BECOMING the ANSWER to OUR PRAYERS

BECOMING the ANSWER

to Our PRAYERS

Prayer for Ordinary Radicals

By Shane Claiborne and Jonathan Wilson-Hartgrove

A number of years ago, after Luke had taken a college January trip to visit several church oriented sites in the east and had visited Shane Claiborne at The Simple Way, I came across this book on becoming the answer to our prayers.  It seemed like a good concept, I read through it quickly, and set it aside.  This past summer I wanted to refer to it when preparing a sermon for church, but I couldn't find the book.  Imagine my surprise when on a Habitat trip to Kalispell, I discovered it tucked away on a shelf in our trailer!  I decided to revisit the book during November.

My prayer image is a collage of prayer and action...or putting my prayers into ACTION!  I tried to come up with some concrete action I could take each day in response to one of the prayers written.  In these Covid times of isolation, that wasn't always easy or what I really wanted to do - emails and donations feeling somewhat impersonal.  But writing it down in a public way forced me to actually DO IT!

How can we all take the step from believer to servant or as Jesus puts it in Matthew 25...from goat to sheep?
